WASCO briefs media on the ongoing dry season

The Water and Sewerage Company Inc. (WASCO) has called a special media briefing for today January 12th to address the ongoing dry season, expected to run through May.


The briefing will feature presentations on rainfall statistics and climate projections from the Meteorological Services.


The Water Resources Management Agency (WRMA) will also update on current water levels and potential implications for WASCO’s abstraction capacity.


WASCO will detail its immediate mitigation measures such as valving and water management, as well as medium-term solutions including desalination initiatives.


The OECS region is bracing for what is expected to be one of the longest dry spells in the past 10-15 years, worsening an already precarious position for thousands of consumers.


Water conservation is being strongly urged with severe impacts also expected on agriculture and food security. Farmers are being urged to consider more resilient crops as irrigation intense operations will be affected.


The tourism sector is also being prepared for the anticipated extended dry spell.
