Martin Cave - new Chair of CARICHAM

The newly elected chair of the Caribbean Chambers of Commerce Martin Cave says it’s time to ‘recalibrate and rethink” how the organisation could serve its purpose more effectively.

Mr. Cave was at the time speaking during an interview featured in “The Economic Scoop” newsletter of the Dominica Chamber of Industry and Commerce.

In the interview he said top priorities of CARICHAM are to deliver tangible benefits to members and explore a regional pension scheme that can benefit businesses and employees across the Caribbean.

Mr. Cave also pledged to strengthen collaboration among national chambers across the region by increasing interactions, foster deeper collaboration and ensure members value CARICHAM as an essential partner.

Among the challenges likely to confront the organisation is “the expected levy on vessels using carbon fuels, under new International Maritime Organization regulations”. Mr. Cave believes “this will increase shipping costs, and ultimately, consumer prices”.

He notes that “shippers are already being pushed toward greener vessels, but in the meantime, the cost of goods could rise significantly, especially in distant markets like ours”.

He was encouraged by a ferry study which seeks to connect Dominica, Antigua and Barbuda and Guadeloupe.
