AGIT calls for independent committee to guide energy policy

The Alliance for Green Innovation and Technology has published a document which it says fact checks ‘some myths shaping Saint Lucia’s energy laws’.

AGIT is concerned that LUCELEC may have significantly influenced the draft Electricity Bill which has been recirculated for public comment.

In a publication on its website, AGIT addresses five myths that dominate conversation on the way forward for meeting Saint Lucia’s energy needs.

AGIT says Myth #1 “Too much solar will destabilise the grid” is a misconception, explaining that “the challenge we face is not an excess of solar energy; it is the need to modernize our infrastructure to harness the full benefits of renewable energy”.

Other myths addressed by AGIT are as follows: “Solar shifts costs to non-solar customers” and “Solar is costly and inaccessible to many”.

AGIT also comments on the myth that “You can’t run a grid on solar and wind; you need baseload power” noting that ‘solar PV and storage together can easily replace fossil fuels’ dismissing the claim that ‘we still need large, always-running diesel or heavy fuel oil plants to keep the grid working’.

AGIT also dismisses the myth that “LUCELEC owns the grid - they need to be central to policy making” and has called for “ an independent committee to guide energy policy based on evidence and national goals”.

The AGIT statement concludes that “LUCELEC should only provide technical advice, not make the rules”.

The full statement can be read here.

LUCELEC is expected to address these and other concerns at a luncheon event with members of the Chamber of Commerce on November 24th, 2025. EV car show and trade expo held in Saint Luc
