The United Workers Party seeking to regain political office says its will implement an economic recovery programme through an agenda which will transform agriculture and fisheries and revitalise the tourism sector.
The UWP manifesto released a few days ago promises to build a vibrant digital economy, improve investment, trade and external relations, boost infrastructure and port development and secure Saint Lucia’s energy future through renewables.
A UWP returned to office promises that youth empowerment will be central to economic expansion through targeted youth friendly policies, capacity building, financing, mentorship and access to markets and networks.
A UWP administration promises to drive growth by unlocking the potential of key economic sectors/pillars and check declines in the agriculture and fisheries sector.
It will do so by providing subsidies on inputs and implement more proactive and consistent technical support and engagement. The UWP promises to increase targeted and strategic marketing efforts at all levels and reduce and subsidize the cost of planting materials and critical inputs.
The UWP manifesto also promises to revitalise tourism through strategic actions, among them the aggressive expansion of the village tourism initiative. A UWP government will also continue the support for branded resort developments as key economic anchors and employment drivers.
The UWP is also promising to empower local participation not just as employees but as entrepreneurs, investors and innovators. It is also hoping to expand the incentive framework regime and financing instruments to support local investment in tourism enterprises.
A UWP administration is also committing to the protecting workers in the sector and will “endeavor to raise the income levels of workers through collaboration with our partners”.
It is also promising to “provide direct income support to those workers who traditionally laid off or put on rotation during the month of September”.
